The Reality of Leaving the House With Three Kids: What’s Helping Us Right Now

There’s something people don’t fully prepare you for when you go from two kids to three — leaving the house suddenly feels like a full-scale operation.

Before George arrived, getting out the door already took planning. Now, with a newborn, a busy toddler and an older child, even a “quick trip” can involve snacks, outfit changes, nappy explosions, missing shoes and someone suddenly needing a toilet stop the second we’re ready to leave.

But amongst the chaos, we’re slowly finding what works for our family right now — and honestly, some things are helping far more than we expected.

We’re definitely not experts, but these are the little things making everyday outings feel more manageable in this season of life.

Accepting That We’re Never Truly “Quick”

This has probably been the biggest mindset shift.

Leaving the house with three kids takes time. Someone always needs something. Someone always decides they’re starving the second they’re buckled in.

Instead of trying to rush through it, we’ve started allowing extra time for absolutely everything — and it’s made outings feel far less stressful.

We’ve also lowered our expectations a little. If we make it out the door mostly dressed with everyone reasonably happy, we’re calling it a win.

A Good Pram Setup Has Been Everything

One of the biggest helps for us has been having a pram setup that actually works for our stage of parenting.

With a newborn and little legs that suddenly get tired halfway through outings, having flexible options is key.

We use the Baby Jogger City Select 2 and it’s honestly been one of the best investments for this season of life because it adapts depending on what we need that day.

What we love about it:

  • can switch between 1 or 2 seats
  • bassinet option for newborn days
  • capsule option
  • glider board option for tired little legs
  • easy to fold and use
  • great storage underneath
  • rubber tyres instead of air tyres (which means no worrying about punctures)

It’s one of those products that makes everyday outings feel that little bit easier when you’re juggling multiple kids.

Snacks Solve Almost Everything

We used to leave the house and “grab something while out.”

Now? Snacks are packed before almost anything else.

Our bag usually contains:

  • fruit pouches
  • crackers
  • muesli bars
  • cut fruit
  • water bottles
  • emergency treats

Half the time snacks are the reason an outing survives.

Lowering the Pressure Helps

One thing we’re learning is that outings don’t need to look perfect to still be worth doing.

Sometimes we only stay somewhere for 45 minutes before someone melts down.
Sometimes the baby needs feeding the entire time.
Sometimes we spend more time getting ready than actually being out.

But getting outside still helps us reset. Even a small outing can completely change the energy of the day.

Baby Wearing Has Been a Lifesaver

There’s something about having your hands free that suddenly becomes priceless with three kids.

Baby wearing has helped us:

  • do kindy drop offs
  • manage playground visits
  • go for walks
  • survive busy cafes
  • comfort a clingy newborn while still helping the older kids

Some days it’s the only reason we manage to leave the house at all.

For everyday use, we’ve been using the Beco Gemini Cool Mesh Baby Carrier V1 and loving how practical and comfortable it is for daily outings.

We’ve also been using the Chekoh Clip Baby Carrier, which has been great to throw on quickly when we’re out and about.

Having a carrier that feels supportive and easy to use has honestly made such a difference in this season of life.

We’re Choosing Easier Outings Right Now

At the moment, we’re saying yes to:

  • playgrounds
  • beach walks
  • local cafes
  • open spaces
  • family-friendly spots
  • places close to home

And saying no (for now) to things that feel overly complicated or stressful with three little ones.

There will be time for bigger adventures again.

Right now we’re embracing slower outings and simpler days.

The Older Kids Have Adapted Better Than We Expected

One of the sweetest parts of this transition has been watching the older kids step into their new roles.

There have definitely been hard moments and adjustments, but there’s also been so much love, excitement and pride.

Seeing them comfort the baby, help with little jobs and slowly grow into this new chapter has made the chaos feel really special too.

What’s Helping Us Most Right Now

A few things making life easier lately:

  • prepping the nappy bag the night before
  • keeping spare clothes in the car
  • always packing extra snacks
  • choosing low-pressure outings
  • accepting we’ll probably run late
  • not overcommitting
  • coffee
  • fresh air
  • realistic expectations

Final Thoughts

We’re still very much figuring out life with three kids. Some outings feel surprisingly smooth, and others feel like absolute chaos from start to finish.

But we’re learning that it doesn’t have to be perfect to still be good. Right now, we’re focusing less on doing everything and more on making memories in the middle of the messy, beautiful stage we’re in.
