Here’s a simple guide to an unforgettable adventure:
Day 1: Arrival and Lake Como Hostel
Catch a flight to (any) Milan Airport. Transfer to a bus heading to Milan Centrale, where you’ll embark on a scenic train ride to the captivating shores of Lake Como. Once you arrive at Como San Giovanni Train station take a bus to Menaggio. Get off at the first stop and walk to your accomodation and check into the cozy Lake Como Hostel, home for the next two nights, offering budget-friendly accommodations with a lakeside view.
We enjoyed walking the cobbled streets of Menaggio as the sun was setting and enjoying a delicious gelato on a bench overlooking the lake… pure magic!

Day 2: Classic Boat Cruise Varenna and Bellagio Exploration
Start your day by getting a ferry ticket at Menaggio pier that will give you access to hop on and off at Varenna and Bellagio. First stop Varenna and enjoy a classic boat cruise on Lake Como. Feel the gentle breeze as you glide across the azure waters, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and charming lakeside towns. Make sure to grab life jackets for the kids and capture precious family moments with plenty of photos.
We organised an hour long classic boat ride on the lake with Varenna Rent a boat. They were easy to deal with over whatsapp and in person! We loved seeing all the major spots that you can get to only by boat and even more special being in a classic boat – Highly recommend!
After your cruise, explore Varenna and make your way to Villa Monastero, where you can buy a ticket and walk your way around the beautiful manicured Italian gardens. Head to the pier and embark on the ferry to Bellagio, known as the “Pearl of Lake Como.” Explore the town’s narrow streets adorned with colorful houses, quaint boutiques, and inviting cafes. Visit the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi or take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque lakefront promenade. Treat yourselves to delicious gelato at the end of the day and soak in the serene atmosphere of this enchanting place.

Day 3: Menaggio and Departure
With not a lot of time in Lake Como spend your last morning exploring Menaggio – leisurely stroll along the lakefront promenade, soaking in the picturesque views. Indulge in another round of gelato, savoring the flavors of Italy one last time.
As your Lake Como adventure comes to an end, return to Lake Como Hostel for a final night of relaxation. Reflect on your wonderful experiences in this picturesque region and cherish the memories made with your family.
Tips for Traveling with a Toddler
- Pack plenty of snacks, toys, and entertainment for the car rides between destinations.
- We used a small travel pram so our Florence could nap when she grew tired.
- Get out of the sun during the heat of the day. Have a big nap so you can stay up later in the evening when its cooler and more comfortable like the locals.
- Schedule breaks for your little one to stretch and play.
- Use your itinerary as a guide rather than strict timetable. Be prepared for unexpected changes… and pack some swimwear for when those unexpected changes involve swimming.
We hope this itinerary inspires your own family adventure through Lake Como
